The Bread Lever
I scampered across the smooth stone countertop to reach the shiny chrome toaster. Down on the side, a little black plastic lever was stuck high up. I gripped the ribbed plastic with both front paws and shoved all my weight downward until it clicked into place with a heavy snap. Inside the dark metal slots, bright orange heating coils immediately started to hum and glow, casting warm reddish stripes across my tummy. The sudden blast of dry, toasty warmth made my ears perk up, and I crouched right on the cool granite to watch the metal wires buzz.
