A Soft Foothold

I set out across the living room carpet, taking slow steps toward the big sofa. The climb up looked a little steep, so I paused and nudged a thick knit throw blanket that was trailing down onto the floor. Grasping the chunky wool with both paws, I tested its weight first. It held steady. Hand over hand, I hauled myself onto the cushion, leaving small dimples in the fabric. Right in the corner, nestled between two corduroy pillows, I found a pocket of soft shade. I sat down, patted the velvet surface beneath me, and watched the quiet room breathe.
