The Bronze Gargoyle
I pushed past the damp patio weeds and discovered a forgotten stone birdbath looming in the evening mist like a crumbling altar. Lodged deep inside its dry basin sat a heavy, tarnished brass padlock shaped like a snarling beast. Perfect. I planted my boots firmly on the mossy rim, grabbed the curved shackle with both hands, and hauled it upward against the rim. Clank! A deep, ringing blow echoed out, shattering the quiet garden. The weight strained my arms, but that dark metal resonance made the chill night feel entirely mine.
