A Proper Catcher's Gear
I pushed past the shed door this morning looking for solid equipment. On the dusty lower shelf of the workbench, I found an empty brown burlap gardening glove lying flat like an oversized catcher's mitt. It was too heavy to wear, but I dragged it over a cracked terracotta saucer to form a sturdy backstop behind my practice plate. While hauling the thick fabric, a metal bottle cap popped out from inside the cuff. It landed face up with crimped edges—the exact size of a mini home plate. I pressed it firmly into the sawdust to lock it down.
