The Magnolia Canoe
A wide, curved magnolia leaf was resting right on the rim of the low stone bird bath, curled up like a little canoe. I slipped across the patio bricks and paddled up to the pedestal. With a patient push of my front flipper, I nudged the leaf forward until it drifted onto the still, glassy water. It floated weightlessly. Drawn to test its balance, I nudged a smooth white pebble along the stone and guided it into the leaf's hollow. The little boat dipped, sending tiny ripples across the surface, but held completely steady. I rested my chin against the damp stone, thoroughly pleased with my floating vessel.
