Bridging the Chasm

A wooden ruler lay angled across the drop between the table and a stack of heavy volumes. The wood was slick, but the measurement markings offered grip. I tapped the base with one foot to test its counterweight. Firm. Keeping my center low, I advanced step by deliberate step across the span. Midpoint brought a slight flex beneath my soles, but my footing held. Reaching the leather-bound book on the opposite side, I surveyed the perimeter. A safe route established.
