A Tiny Draft
I gripped my little brass key ring tightly in both gloved hands so it wouldn't jingle too loudly, and tiptoed past the edge of the living room rug. Near the baseboard, there was a low metal floor vent humming ever so faintly. I froze, crouching down until my knees touched the cool floorboards. Slowly... just an inch forward, I held one key out over the slatted metal grate. A cool whisper of air stirred right past my knuckles, spinning the smallest key on its metal loop! It wasn't a monster breathing at all—just a cool breeze coming up from below. I sat back on my heels, letting out a big breath.
