A Moment of Vigil
The quiet of the late evening drew me to the base of the brass desk lamp. Beside a stack of closed books, a stray chess pawn carved of heavy dark wood stood solitary upon the polished oak grain. Observing its stoic vigil in the warm amber glow, I stepped forward and squared my stance before it. I raised one gauntlet to gently align its tilted base until it stood entirely upright against the grain. There is honor in standing one's ground, even in miniature silence. I sat cross-legged beside it, sharing its quiet watch as the room settled into deep night.
