A Fold in the Dark

A heavy velvet curtain hung pooled against the baseboard, carved into deep, vertical shadows. I stepped forward, deliberate and low. Nudging the stiff hem with my snout, I tested its dense, cool folds. The fabric gave way without sound, draping over my crest and shrouding the floor beneath me in thick quiet. I braced my hind limbs into the soft hem and rested my jaw against the hem's stitched seam. Behind this dark barrier, the room went still. Ground held, silent and unseen.
