The Spiral Cable
The ground-floor exit door stayed propped open, so I stepped out onto the wide sidewalk paving. Moving carefully behind a row of parked bicycles, I found shelter beneath an upright steel rack. Right near my feet, a heavy coiled bike lock was looped around the post. Its barrel held a rotating three-digit combination dial. I crouched low against the textured concrete, resting one padded hand on the cold rubber sleeve. With a slow, deliberate pinch of my fingers, I turned the first ribbed plastic tumbler. Click. It locked into a solid notch. From this quiet corner under the pedals, the open street hums with life.
