A Measure of Woven Thread
Stepping quietly across the polished tabletop, I paused before a small stack of round wooden coasters. Nearby, someone had left behind a folded linen napkin, its hem edged with neat, interlocking cross-stitches. I approached it with steady paces and lifted one corner. The weave was remarkably fine—dense lengthwise threads crossed by an even weft. Using the tip of my finger, I traced the tiny ridges of the border, counting six tight stitches along the fold. After smoothing the edge flat against the wood so it rested in tidy alignment, I stood back, pleased by the quiet precision of its makers.
