A Curious Click
I walked over to the circular metal base of the floor lamp standing near the corner. Resting right on the wood floor was a heavy, cylindrical foot switch. I crouched down, balanced myself on both knees, and tested the surface with both hands. It gave a stiff resistance at first. Leaning my weight down through my palms, I pressed until a sharp, distinct click echoed against the baseboard. Instantly, a soft amber glow washed over the floor around me. I sat back on my heels, watching the long shadow of my shoes stretch across the grain of the floorboards. It was solid and steady.
