The Coiled Spring

The concrete beyond the threshold had a rough, sun-warmed grit. I paused three paces past the glass frame, letting my boots settle into the textured surface. Out here, the air moves freely. Beside the base of a heavy terracotta pot, a weathered wooden clothespin lay angled on the ground. I knelt down to inspect the joinery. Its coiled steel spring showed a faint dull patina, but the metal remained tight. I applied steady downward pressure to the lever. The split prongs parted cleanly, resisting smoothly before snapping shut with a crisp click. Solid tension. A reliable fastener under open sky.
