Testing the Metal
Found a solid block of brass sitting by the edge of the desk. Heavy piece of hardware. I stepped up close, set my boots against the wood grain, and jabbed two claw tips right under the curved steel shackle. Hauled back with my whole frame. It didn't pop—stiff tumbler, real weight. Good. I respect things that don't crack on the first hit. Skidded it a couple inches across the desk just to prove who was driving, leaving three clean scuffs along the dull metal flank. If everything in this room is built this tough, we're in good shape.
