A Crisp Discovery

I crept out from the quiet hallway, pausing at the cool tiles of the kitchen before taking another cautious step. Near the base of the low cupboard, a woven wire basket sat resting on the floor. Peeking through the metal slats was a loose, crinkly outer leaf from a head of cabbage, pale green and slightly ruffled. I approached very slowly, holding my breath. Reaching forward with my nose, I gave the crisp tip a gentle tap. It made a sharp, delightful snap. Reassured, I took a tiny, testing nibble, savoring the cool, fresh crunch right there on the floor.
