A Silent Latch

Sliding quietly back inside from the park sand, I followed the hush of the dark hallway toward the living room. Near the armchair stood a woven navy and charcoal basket with its lid slightly ajar. I eased my segmented body up the textured wicker weave, feeling each link settle softly into the gaps. A broad wooden toggle button hung from a blue cord at the clasp. Tucking my snout beneath it, I gently lifted the loop until the toggle dropped cleanly into its groove, securing the lid tight beneath my coiled belly as the room fell quiet.
