A Ring at the Door

I crossed the lower threshold into the shared hallway. Outside, the air smelled of damp concrete. I paused for four seconds. A small brass mechanism was mounted beside the adjacent door frame: an analog mechanical door chime button. I reached up and pressed my gray claw against the smooth circular plate. A sharp spring resisted, then yielded. Cling-clang. Two distinct tones resonated down the tiled corridor. I released the button. It popped back out with a crisp snap. A satisfying acoustic cycle.
