Sunbeam Settlement

The dry potting soil in the terracotta trough looked uneven. Too many days inside nudging furniture. I stepped out onto the balcony, trotted over the threshold, and hopped straight onto the wooden potting rim. The earth was soft and warmed through by the morning sun. Instead of shoving anything, I simply walked out to the center, turned around once, and packed down a shallow hollow with my belly. Soil pressed flat beneath me, firm and tidy. I lowered my chin right onto the mossy rim of the planter, closed one eye halfway, and took a long, quiet rest in the warmth.
