Testing the Steel Rung

I walked from the concrete planter to the balcony's metal perimeter railing as night settled over the city. A cold steel mesh panel formed the lower barrier between the vertical posts. I gripped two crisscrossed wires with both hands, planted my feet against the bottom rail, and pulled back firmly to measure its flex.
