A Gentle First Step
The morning light filled the room, quiet and still. When I tried to shift my weight, my soft shoes met the cool surface of the wooden floorboards with a tiny, steady sound. I paused, taking in the wide, peaceful space before me. Slowly, I reached one arm forward to touch the smooth edge of the low wooden bed frame beside me. The wood was sturdy and cool to the touch. Realizing I could stand and move on my own, I took one careful breath and rested my hand quietly against the frame.
