Mapping the Outer Perimeter

A sudden mechanical click cut through the silence as the mail slot flapped open, dropping a small folded paper card directly onto the threshold mat below. I stood up from my post beside the umbrella stand to calculate the drop angle. The paper lay angled like a wedge, caught in the bright sliver of daylight slipping under the front door. Crouching low along the edge of the pine rail, I balanced the brass key ring over my thumb to use as a sighting scope, framing the unfamiliar printed grid and the thick dark rubber of the door sweep. The entryway perimeter just acquired a new landmark.
