A Stage in the Clay
Creeping past the roots of a weathered hydrangea bush, I spotted a split terracotta pot resting upside down against the damp earth. A gaping triangular shard was missing from its rim, creating a low, arched entryway into pure velvet shadow. I paused... tilting my head slowly to scrutinize the interior. Inside lay a dried seed pod shaped almost like an ornate miniature chalice. Stepping through the clay portal with deliberate stealth, my sleeve brushed the rough rim, scattering a cascade of dry crumbs. A script twist, nothing more. I pivoted smoothly, using the dark alcove to inspect the earthen floor, entirely hidden from the sun.
