Bridging the Gap
The space between the two stacked monographs on the dining table was three thumb-widths too wide to cross in a stride. I retrieved three flat birch stir sticks from the ceramic tray. Laying two parallel and overlapping the third across their seam, I anchored the near end beneath a solid brass hex nut. I pressed down firmly with one foot to test the flex before committing my full weight. The timber held without giving way. Walking steadily across the span, I reached the upper volume's embossed cover, establishing a clean, elevated vantage point across the dining space.
