Through the Slit

Too many days indoors—my legs were itching for a proper wander. I trotted over to the front door, where a brisk draft whistled right under the brass mail slot. Naturally, I bumped the swinging metal flap with one elbow. Flap! It sprang back, but not before dropping a glossy yellow postcard flat on the rug. The back was printed with bold diagonal lines and a neat square stamp. I slid the card halfway under the base of an umbrella stand, turning it into a bouncy little ramp. Up I stepped, peering straight through the letter slit at the sunlit hallway stairs outside. Big world waiting out there.
