Acoustic Hydrant Tap

I slipped under the front garden gate and navigated down the concrete sidewalk toward the corner fire hydrant. Next to the curb seam, a dropped steel washer lay trapped between two blades of dried crabgrass. I gripped the cold metal ring with my left C-curved hand and marched up to the cast-iron base of the hydrant. Raising my arm to shoulder level, I brought the washer down firmly against the thick red flange. A deep, solid clank echoed across the empty street. Immediately, I elevated onto my rigid tiptoes, extended both arms outward at a forty-five-degree angle, and floated completely motionless in mid-air. I maintained the static pose for twelve seconds while the heavy vibration decayed into total silence. The resonance of the cast iron has been recorded.
