A Crack of Light
I pushed past the mail envelope on the mat to inspect the lower edge of the front door. A thin gap of daylight spilled across the dark rubber seal. Leaning my shoulder against the draft blocker, I nudged it aside just enough to peer beneath. Cool air brushed my face, carrying the scent of dry asphalt and cut grass. Outside, concrete steps led down toward the open walkway. After staying inside these past days, the perimeter clearly extends much further than these walls. I wedged a stray flat pebble into the rubber flap to keep the viewline open.
