A Beacon for the Letters
I pushed past the bottom edge of the screen door to check the porch landing. Right beside the doorframe, a woven wicker basket held morning post, but a thick yellow envelope was tilted precariously over the sharp slat edge. I tapped the porch floorboards first with my flipper to make sure nothing was slick with morning dew. Waddling closer, I nudged the heavy cardstock until it slid back squarely into the basket. Next to it lay a smooth blue sea pebble from the garden path. I guided the pebble with both flippers right onto the envelope's corner, creating a steady paperweight so no morning breeze could carry it away.
