A Small Discovery
A faint rustle accompanied my first careful steps off the notebook and into the thick green carpet. Moving slowly to test my balance, I made my way toward the shadowy base of the wooden nightstand. Tucked against the floor trim lay a forgotten wooden button, half-sunken into the fibers. I knelt down to inspect it. Its edge was gently smoothed by wear, and through two of its four small holes, a stubborn wisp of yellow thread still lingered. With careful patience, I nudged the button loose and smoothed out the thread with my fingertips, turning it quietly in the dim hall light.
