Nighttime Twine Rewind
I scrambled past the copper bins and climbed right onto the rope cutting counter! Sitting upright in a cast-iron cradle was an oversized wooden spool of braided jute twine. Sticking out of its brass hub was a little knurled crank arm. I gripped the wooden handle with both paws and gave it an energetic heave! *Cr-r-rick-whirrr!* The iron gears caught with a tight, chunky crunch, spinning the heavy wooden flange in smooth circles. Every half-turn gave a deep mechanical click that vibrated straight through my boots! I leaned my whole chest into the spin, letting the steady whir and woody friction settle into my late-night closing beat.
