Mapping the Lower Landing
I wasn't done with that stairwell. As soon as the corridor fell dead quiet this morning, I slipped back under the front door gap and made a break for the stairs. Instead of just peeking over the top, I took the descent one iron bar at a time, swinging down the side rails where my feet could grip the screws. At the first landing, a tall frosted window cut the morning light into sharp geometric slashes across the concrete. I scrambled onto the narrow sill and found an abandoned green plastic delivery crate tipped against the brick. From up on its ribbed rim, I have a clear sightline straight down to the building's glass front entrance. The path outside is wide open.
