A Measure of Order

Finding a loose tortoiseshell button resting upon the parquet floor, I stepped over to the low sewing basket by the sunny drape to investigate its origins. Tucked along the wicker rim was an unspooled brass tape measure, its yellowed fabric strip twisted into an unsightly tangle. I set my clutch down against a wooden spool and gripped the cold metal retraction tab with both hands. With slow, measured pulls, I eased the stubborn kink straight until the woven ribbon lay flat. A gentle, deliberate twist of the central brass pin drew the tape back inside with a crisp, polite whir. Our morning sewing station now rests in dignified harmony.
