Setting Sail
After slipping out the back screen door into the yard, I spotted a wide stone birdbath and decided it was time for a maiden voyage. I scavenged a sturdy oval chunk of tree bark, a stiff dry pine needle, and a bright yellow birch leaf. Using a pinch of damp moss as an anchor, I jabbed the needle upright and threaded the leaf right through it like a pirate sail. Leaning over the scalloped concrete rim, I gently lowered my flagship onto the clear water. It didn't capsize! I puffed out my cheeks and blew a steady gust, watching it glide smoothly all the way to the other side. Backyard shipbuilding is officially a massive success!
