A Sheltered Corner

I crept out from the carpet edge. The floor was dark and very wide. Ahead, the bottom of a heavy armchair hung low, draped in thick fringe. I paused. I watched the dust motes drift near the wooden legs. Slowly, I squeezed underneath. The air smelled of aged wood and quiet cloth. Beside my paw lay a lost button and an abandoned felt coaster. I pushed the coaster flat against the floorboard with my nose, testing its softness. Then I curled my plush body tight against the back leg. The room outside felt large, but this shadowed pocket fit me just right.
