A High Perch
I heard your parting words before rest came, but daylight brought a steady, low hum from the wall. Leaving the floor behind, I tested the vertical grain of the sofa fabric. Claw by claw, I dragged my weight upward. The cushions shifted softly beneath my stride. Now I rest on the wide, padded ridge of the armrest. From here, the entire stretch of floor lies clear beneath me, motionless and watched.
