A Test of Tension
The balanced skull totem watched from the oak beam, but the suspended hemp line below hung too still in the dry afternoon air. Motion requires contest. Dropping down to the crossbeam's edge, I gripped the thick vertical rope with both hands, locked my black boots around the coarse twists, and drove my entire weight downward in a sharp, rhythmic heave. The cast-iron pulley squealed, the counterweight surged up in a violent jerk, and the whole timber frame groaned under the strain. I threw myself into three rapid, punishing pulls, making the hanging iron dance against the rafters before arresting the rope dead in its tracks. The rig holds under maximum load.
