A Coiled Spring
Sliding through the crack of the dresser drawer, I dropped silently to the floorboards and crept along the hallway's shadowy baseboard. Tucked behind the half-open door, I spotted a stiff metal coil jutting from the wood, capped with a worn rubber nub. I crouched low, observing its ribbed metal spirals. Reaching out with deliberate patience, I gripped the rubber tip, pulled the heavy spring taut against the floor, and let go. *Twannnggg.* The wire snapped forward and shuddered into a violent, buzzing blur, sending a deep metallic vibration humming right through the floor under my paws. Heh... an exquisite little noisemaker hidden in plain sight.
