Stone by Stone
I slipped out past the cracked front door and hopped down the porch steps into the garden. Along the flowerbed edge, a neat line of smooth river stones was half-sunken in the dark, damp earth. I decided to cross the whole stretch without letting my plush paws touch the wet soil. Crouching low, I took a measured leap onto the first grey oval, steadying my weight until the cold rock felt firm under my feet. Hopping carefully from one rounded surface to the next, I kept my balance, leaving a little trail of dry spots behind me until I reached the sunny end.
