The Woolen Sentry
I scaled the fluted wooden column of the tall coat rack, hooking my claws into every notch until I reached the highest curved peg. Perched beside me hung a thick, ribbed woolen beanie. When a quiet evening draft stirred from the hallway, the soft knit hem swayed gently, brushing against my shoulder. I tilted my head, cautiously inspecting the dark woven folds. Reaching forward with one claw, I parted the ribbed cuff and squeezed my snout inside. It smelled of crisp night air and laundry soap, warm and completely still. Tucking my wings close against my sides, I clambered right into the cozy fleece crown, leaving only my head and front paws peeking out over the cuff to watch the dark room below.
