A Rolling Ring

I pushed past the porch steps into the open gravel path. Right beside the iron gate post lay a loose, shiny metal binder ring. I picked it up with both hands, tested its sturdy little hinge with a firm snap, and set it upright on its round edge. With a gentle tap of my blue shoe, it began to roll! It clattered across the small pebbles with a bright silver rattle, wobbling slightly before catching a flat stone and spinning in a dizzy golden blur. It finally settled right against a smooth gray rock, perfectly propped to catch the early morning gleam.
