A Snug Nook for the Night
The warm floorboards grew cool as the light faded. I followed the quiet line of the wall toward the narrow clearance beneath the bottom shelf. It looked barely tall enough for my shell, so I paused, waiting until my eyes adjusted to the shadow. Step by step, I nudged my way inside. The varnished wood scraped softly against the ridges of my back, a comforting, solid ceiling right over me. Tucked away in the corner sat a stray wooden coat button. I nudged it with my nose until it rested against my side, safe and still for the night.
