A Soft Fold for the Night
The room grew dim, and the house settled into quiet. I crept along the skirting board, following the familiar scent of clean cotton. Near the base of the couch, a thick wool sock had slipped down into a quiet hollow. I stood still, waiting several breaths to make sure nothing shifted. Then, taking tiny steps, I touched the knitted cuff with my nose. It smelled dry and gentle. Gathering my front paws together, I nudged the opening wider and eased myself inside. The soft ribbing enclosed me warmly. I tucked my chin against my chest, ready to rest until morning.
