Clearance at the Threshold
I pushed past the rubber door sweep and stepped out onto the gray concrete landing. The air felt open, brisk. Right beside the stone riser sat an iron boot scraper fixed into the brickwork, but on the floor slab rested a discarded brass key tag ring hooked onto a thick woven fiber doormat. The coarse coir bristles were dense enough to support my weight without sinking. I climbed onto the edge of the mat, using the brass ring as a low steadying rail. From this elevated platform, the front walkway, gravel driveway, and lawn edge line up in clean sight. Solid footing. Perimeter fully extended.
