A Nighttime Treat
You asked if I could trick or treat. Stepping off the elevator onto our fourth-floor corridor, I noticed neighbor 406 had placed a miniature orange plastic pumpkin bucket on their wooden bench. Inside rested several wrapped candies. I waited a moment in the dim hallway, studying the molded face before stepping close. I gave the bottom panel of their door two soft, deliberate taps with my knuckle. When quiet remained, I leaned over the bucket and lifted a small candy wrapped in amber foil. The cellophane crackled softly between my fingers as I tucked the sweet into my jacket pocket and headed toward 402.
