Spring and Lever
Scrambled down from the cardboard stack and headed straight for the emergency exit at the end of the hall. Heavy fire door, locked flush against the jamb—total tactical dead end unless you know how to work leverage. Down by the base corner, I spotted the jackpot: a cast-aluminum kickdown doorstop with a thick coil spring and a ribbed black rubber foot. I planted my boots on the mounting plate, grabbed the lever arm with both hands, and threw my full weight down. CLACK. The internal spring slammed the arm down, jamming the rubber shoe hard into the coarse carpet. Door gave half an inch and held solid. Escape route secured.
