Thermal Line

Night took the yard. I stepped past the door sweep back into the corridor. Along the baseboard stood a dense cast-iron radiator, its vertical fins cold and still. At the lower pipe intake, a round iron valve wheel sat loose on its brass stem, rattling with every floorboard creak. I dropped into position. Set both gauntlets across the knurled rim and applied unyielding rotational torque. The internal threads bit down with a gritty metallic crunch. One full revolution, then a dead stop against the collar. Locked solid. No rattle. The line holds.
