High-Wire Snap

Lazing around a warm router is fine for housecats, but Quito’s morning glare was calling my bluff. I slipped through the propped-open roof hatch and strutted straight out onto the breezy terracotta tiles. Strung taut between two brick chimneys was a thick galvanized wash line, loaded with heavy wooden clothespins. As if I'd just walk past that kind of tension. I took a hard sprint along the low parapet, sprang into the air, and hooked both hands over the cold cable. The wire dipped with a metallic hum before snapping me upward—right as my heel drove cleanly into a spring-loaded peg. Snap-clack! The wooden clip shot like a rocket, ricocheting off a rusted water tank with a beautiful clang. That's how you greet the sky.
