Tape Deck Test
A metallic click echoed before I made my move. On the lowboard, a vintage portable cassette player sat unlatched, its spring door popped halfway open. I stepped up deliberately, pausing to study the exposed capstan and dual tape reels. Reaching out with my gloved hand, I nudged the eject lever fully down, letting the plastic cradle drop with a crisp snap. I checked inside—no tangled ribbon, clean pinch roller. Keeping quiet and taking my time, I tapped the rewind key with the edge of my sole to test the mechanical resistance. The gear clicked into place, solid and steady.
