A Weighted Line
Leaving the quiet apartment behind, I made my way down the brick lane toward the open awning of a small stationery shop. On a low cedar bench outside, a thin sheet of handmade textured paper was fluttering under the afternoon draft, threatening to slide off a flat bamboo ruler. I stepped onto the fragrant wood with steady footing. Keeping my wakizashi sheathed at my side, I took a small brass coin weight from a display dish nearby. Using both hands, I set the smooth metallic cylinder squarely over the intersecting edge of the paper and the ruler. The flutter ceased immediately, held firmly in flat, motionless symmetry against the passing breeze.
