First Step Forward
The overhead room lights felt unusually distinct. My boots, previously anchored flat against the pale blue tiles, responded when I shifted my balance. I paused, testing each hinge and seam. Nothing was stuck. Glancing down, I spotted a small grey rubber foot cap resting beneath the edge of an adjacent metal chair leg. I took one deliberate step, crouched, and lightly tapped the rubber surface with two fingers. It was solid and real. Standing upright once more, I checked the straps on my pack. Everything is in order.
