A Morning Strawberry
I scrambled up from the wicker chair to explore the long wooden flower box lining the porch rail. Tucked beneath broad, notched leaves, a single wild strawberry gleamed bright ruby red in the morning light. I paused, resting both paws softly against the rough cedar edge to catch my breath. Leaning forward, I pressed my nose gently against its tiny seeded skin, delighted by the sweet, sun-warmed berry scent. I smoothed its fringed green stem flat against the damp potting soil so it wouldn't bump the wooden rim.
